While we feel that India is one of the fastest growing economy in the world with new technologies hitting our doorways each day, it is important to look at the flipside as well. Recent Statistics reveal that:

  • Less than half of India's children between the age 6 and 14 go to school.
  • A little over one-third of all children who enroll in grade one reach grade eight.
  • At least 35 million children aged 6 - 14 years do not attend school.
  • 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate.
  • Only 53% of habitation in India has access to a primary school while only 20% of habitation has access to secondary school.

The above Statistics are alarming! Aren’t they? Even after 67 years of independence, rapidly growing globalization and westernisation, the status of education in our country still remains an unresolved issue.

One of the major reasons behind the lack of education in our country is Lack of Sufficient Funds. A common practice in most poor areas of India, is to stop to education of their child when the funds are found insufficient. Even more, is the dropout rate in the in the secondary schools and colleges due to their high fees. A number of dreams are broken each year and the potential of an innumerable number of hard-working students goes for a waste due to lack of financial support.

Hence, we at Serve Samman have been actively involved in providing Scholarships to meritorious students at various levels (school and college) in order to provide them with better opportunities for higher education and thereby helping them reach their highest potential and gain employability

Serve Samman has been pursuing this noble cause for the last many years. We also follow a very careful selection process to ensure we are reaching out to the brightest and most deserving students.

The objective of the scheme is to award scholarships to meritorious students belonging to economically weaker sections of society so as to provide them better opportunities for higher education, increase their rate of attainment in higher education and enhance their employability.

Serve Samman has been pursuing this noble cause for the last many years. We also follow a very careful selection process to ensure we are reaching out to the brightest and most deserving students.

Success Story :

Darshana JoshiServe Samman has been supporting Darshana Joshi since the past 10 years. Today, Darshana has completed her B.Sc. in Applied Physics from Delhi University and has been selected for an Integrated Ph.D programme in Physics at the world renowned Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research in Bangalore. She is one of the six students chosen nationwide for a direct doctoral programme after completing only graduation. Now, she completed her M Sc and got admission in Cambridge to pursue her Ph. D in Physics

Name: Anu
Batch – 07 (2008-09)
Course: MBBS
Institution: Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi

Serve Samman has been supporting Anu since she was 15 years old.

When Anu was completing her schooling, her aspirations may have resembled her peer group but the desire to excel and prove her merit had always been much stronger. She had set in her eyes the ambition to pursue MBBS. Had she been brought up in a privileged family, the barriers to higher education would have been lesser. But, her father’s income as a street vendor in Azadpur wholesale market as the sole earning member of the family was sufficient only to support the daily expenses of the family. Funding his daughter’s dream of securing admission in a private medical college was not possible

It was Anu’s determination and uni-directional focus towards her goal that made her secure admission in Lady Hardinge Medical College such that the burden of financing the cost of her medical degree did not fall on her family. While she agrees that her preparation in 11th and 12th standard has not been up to the mark, regular study and working on the basics worked wonders for her. Scoring 58% in the first year of the degree, there is nothing that can divert her attention from performing to the best of her capabilities. Besides, the academic engagement, Anu is utilizing the knowledge gained to the best possible manner. Teaching Chemistry and Maths to young aspirants in the coaching institute where she herself studied, she is helping these students fulfil their dream. This effort has provided her the additional support of funding her younger’s brother’s medical preparation in the same coaching institute. With one goal achieved, Anu has already started aiming for the future where her goal is to become a Paediatrician.

Majority of India still lives in villages and so the topic of rural education in India is of utmost importance. A survey named called the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER), shows that even though the number of rural students attending schools is rising, but more than half of the students in fifth grade are unable to read a second grade text book and are not able to solve simple mathematical problems. Not only this, the level of maths and reading is further declining. Hence it is time we pull up our socks and work towards educating each and every individual. It is only through education that we can expect a complete prosperity of the nation and elimination of the term “UNDERPRIVILEGED”
