Serve Samman is a non-profit organization that works with people from weaker sections of the society
The world is home to 45 million who are blind. In fact, every 3rd blind person in the world is an Indian. About 90% of the worlds visually impaired live in developing countries. Globally, uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of visual impairment; cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in middle- and low-income countries.80% of Indian population especially the elderly poor lives deep in the rural countryside having little or no access to adequate medical aid.
Eye and Health Camps
It is found that 80% of blindness is preventable or curable, however most people are unable to seek treatment due to financial restrictions and lack of resources in their area. Based on this awareness, Serve Samman has set up eye camps where screening eye and cataract surgery at I Care Eye Hospital has been conducted since 2012.This year we had the opportunity to screen students of MCD schools by performing check ups and assessing any disturbances in vision. These camps are set up because parents of underprivileged students often lack the resources or time needed to get their children monitored for issues related to eyes and vision.
In order to contribute, we were able to conduct a total of 161 camps where we screened 19034 patients. Of the 590 patients with cataracts, we were able to organize 125 cataracts surgeries at the I Care Eye Hospital in Noida. In addition, 1788 glasses were distributed to patients who required them.
We were further able to provide by conducting 6 camps with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Hero for Truck Driver & DTC Bus Driver. During the months from August to October, we screened 805 patients and provided free glasses to patients that needed them.
Additionally, we had the opportunity to participate in 3 days of free eye camps in ARYA INTERNATIONAL MAHASAMELAN at Swarn Jyanti Park, Rohini, New Delhi from October 26th to October 28th. During this time, we were able to screen 624 patients and distribute free glasses accordingly.
